Say bye-bye to bloated desktop software, because soon you won't need it. Microsoft announced yesterday that by 2017, more than 25% of its revenue will come from advertising, not Excel, PowerPoint and Word. No wonder.
We're writing this from inside a web browser. Sites such as Swivel allow you to create better charts than Excel. Google Earth, Google Analytics, and Google do-anything programs are now free inside the web. Apple's new iWork can import spreadsheets from Microsoft's Excel and manipulate the numbers -- what happens when Google does too? Will Excel just fade away?
All this will change online advertising, creating new channels to intercept users while they are in work mode, typing for free online. It will also change Office -- back from software to just a room with four walls.
