The miracle of E Ink is here--flexible digital displays that turn paper sheets into moving video. Check out the bottle label above--that digital readout can change. Groovy.
The technology has been around since 2000, but now marketers are beginning to talk seriously about inserting black-and-white video sheets into magazines. The "electronic paper displays" will act as a flexible screen, and be powered by a coin-sized battery, surprising readers with a little YouTube experience as they flip to the back. Mediaweek says some marketers scoff at the idea of inserting multisensory video pages in print. Others are already testing lenticular ads in Rolling Stone and blinking eyes in Entertainment Weekly. The gossip press will have a field day showing Britney Spears in motion. The question: Should we recycle this as paper or plastic?
