Twitter adds election "topics" at top. Ads coming?

Microblogging service Twitter added a little horizontal bar at the top of each user's page today with an election news feed. It shows hot topics, such as "Bush" and "Katie Couric," that people are tweeting about ... and if you click on the topic you go to a special Twitter page showing updates from people around the world who mention the theme in their messages.

Twitter says it is providing users a new way to follow important topics such as the U.S. presidential election and connect with other users. The addition also could be a trial balloon to see if people would click on small ads placed in a similar location. If consumers see news flashes at the top of their Twitter feeds, why not ads, too?
