Advertising on Twitter, through the back door


Someone has figured out how to make money selling ads on Twitter before Twitter does. TwittAd.com entices users of the web texting service to change their backgrounds into designs with ads on the left side, and to receive small payments of say $10 a week from the advertiser. At first glance this seems a good deal for advertisers — 10 bucks to have ads reach potentially a thousand people for a week? — until you realize, as TechCrunch noted, almost no one at Twitter visits someone else’s home page. Tweets are pushed to your page, like an email inbox.

Clever idea. But since few will see the ads, don’t hold your breath for the ROI case studies.
